In Early 2008, the Department of Emergency Medicine received approval to begin a Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. John Munyak, MD, a practicing emergency medicine physician who is with added qualifications in sports medicine is the director of the program. He will be directing our new Sports Medicine Fellow for the 2009-2010 year, Michael Roselli, MD.

The Sports Medicine Fellowship Program in Emergency Medicine prepares the fellow to diagnose and manage medical illnesses and injuries involving sports, exercise, and rehabilitation. The fellow will also be prepared to successfully complete the Sports Medicine Board Exam. The fellow will further develop his or her skills in teaching and research with opportunities in both regional and national forums. New York City offers an extensive assortment of event coverage at all levels of competition throughout the area. To enhance the clinical experience, the fellow collaborates with exercise physiologists from Adelphi University, Athletic Trainers from the US Merchant Marine Academy, and Sports Medicine Specialists at the Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Services (STARS), a health system owned, Sports Medicine center.

The program will emphasize physiology and bio mechanics, principles of nutrition, effects of performance and competition, team physician and training room principles, and medical legal aspects of exercise and sports. The fellow’s experience will also include injury prevention and nutrition, Exercise prescription, rehabilitation and physical therapy and managing acute and chronic illnesses.

Current ongoing research/scholarly activities include work on knee/leg/ankle and foot injuries, wrestling, shoulder dislocations and patella dislocations. A DVD simulation is also being created for educational purposes.
