Emergency Medicine Fellowships

International Emergency Medicine

Our department has been very active in International Emergency Medicine, with programs in Thailand, Peru, and India. In conjunction with the EM residency program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC), we will recruit our first International EM fellow.

Thailand

On a yearly basis, attendings and residents from our emergency department travel to Bangkok to lecture to EM residents on various topics and conduct workshops. The development of pre-hospital care in Thailand made a huge advance in the past year with the initiation of government funding for a nationwide pre-hospital care system.

India

EM activity in India is coordinated through the LIJMC EM department. The first International EM meeting in India was held in Hyderabad in October 2002. Manhasset faculty, Shyambhai Rao, MD, and Adam Church, MD, lectured and presented research at this large and successful conference. Annual meetings in India are planned.

Peru

Our department has been an active leader in the development of EM and PHC in Peru since 1998. Manhasset faculty Leo Huertas, MD, Annabella Salvador, MD, Adam Church, MD, and EM resident, Howard Shaps, MD, toured many hospitals and lectured at the Ministry of Public Health in Lima in 2001. Benjamin Greenblatt, MD, conducted further evaluation of the developing EM and PHC system in the spring of 2003.
