North Shore University Hospital's Department of Emergency Medicine has the largest group of RDMS certified/eligible physicians in the country. The North Shore University Hospital Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship is a one year program designed to develop expertise in all applications of emergency medicine ultrasound. Fellows work clinically in the department and also spend time assisting in education, research and quality assurance for the department. All fellows are required to conduct a scholarly project during their fellowship.

Emergency ultrasound is a recently established field of emergency medicine employing novel approaches to ultrasound applications. The potential uses for ultrasound in the emergency department which aim to facilitate diagnosis in a time and cost effective manner are endless. There are currently over ten active protocols regarding the use of ultrasound in the emergency department. The Emergency Ultrasound faculty has published much of its work in peer-reviewed journals.
